The magical Whitsundays is made up of 74 tropical islands scattered across the Great Barrier Reef and is one of the most visited destinations in Australia.
To reach the Whitsundays, most people take a boat trip from the delightful town of Airlie Beach, though you can also travel from Hamilton Island. There is a big backpacker scene in Airlie Beach as well as some luxury hotels and resorts, so there’s something for everyone.
The Great Barrier Reef protects the islands from large swells, making them ideal for sailing, swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on secluded beaches and undisturbed bays.
Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is regularly acknowledged as the most beautiful beach in the world. Its sand is 98% silica, and so white that it can appear unreal. Don’t miss Hill Inlet, at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. As the tide shifts, the bright white sand and blue hues of the inlet blend seamlessly to create those turquoise swirls you see all over Instagram!
