Waitomo is a tiny township with barely 50 residents however, it’s also home to several caves and thousands of glow worms!
The glowworms are actually a form of larvae that glow in order to attract their food into their chain-like webs. These bright little guys hang out over pools of water until they pupate and fly away. As we found out, they are extremely tricky to catch doing their thing on camera and a slow shutter speed is an absolute must.
There are several experiences dedicated to exploring the caves beneath Waitomo including a boat cruise, abseiling and a 3 hr eco-tour. You can also brave one of the black water rafting tours; Black Labyrinth or Black Abyss as well as the Ruakuri Cave.
